Description
More than six centuries ago, a high-ranking Roman family chose the lands of what is now Salar to build one of the most luxurious residences in ancient Hispania. Its mosaics, its architecture and the secrets that each archaeological campaign continues to uncover make it one of the most remarkable heritage sites in the province of Granada, and one of the least known beyond its borders.
This excursion from Granada combines a guided visit to the Roman Villa and its Interpretation Centre with a walk through the village of Salar itself, one of Spain's so-called Magical Villages, with all the logistics taken care of: transfer, entry ticket and expert guide included.
WHAT YOU WILL SEE
- The villa mosaics: Preserved in extraordinary detail, they document the domestic life and refinement of the Roman elite in Andalusia. In quality and importance, they rival the great villas of Sicily.
- The archaeological site: An active excavation where each campaign brings new discoveries to light. More than six centuries of Roman occupation are revealed with every visit.
- The Interpretation Centre: A museum space that contextualises the villa's findings and hosts temporary exhibitions of surprisingly broad scope, with unexpected connections to figures of universal art such as Picasso.
- The Picasso connection: One of the curiosities only discovered on a visit to Salar, explained by the expert guide during the tour of the Interpretation Centre.
- The village of Salar: Recognised as one of Spain's Magical Villages, with quiet streets and a human scale that provides a striking contrast to the intensity of the archaeological site.
- The landscape of the Granada Vega: The journey from Granada crosses one of Andalusia's most fertile plains, with views of the sierra that frame the trip in both directions.
